Carpool cost splitter

Enter the distance, the car's consumption and the fuel price, add tolls and parking for the whole trip, and say how many people are in the car. You get the total and each person's share, or each passenger's share if the driver rides free.

How to use it

  1. Choose metric or US units and enter the distance; tick round trip to double it.
  2. Enter consumption and the fuel price.
  3. Enter the tolls and parking for the whole trip, in the same currency.
  4. Enter how many people are in the car and tick “driver rides free” if the passengers pay for the driver’s seat.

How it works

  • Fuel cost = distance × consumption × price, using the same fuel helper as the fuel trip cost calculator.
  • Total = fuel cost + tolls + parking.
  • Each person pays = total ÷ people, or total ÷ (people − 1) when the driver rides free.

Worked example

400 km at 7.5 L/100 km needs 30 L; at 1.80 that is 54.00. Tolls 12.00 and parking 6.00 make 72.00. Four people pay 18.00 each; if the driver rides free, three passengers pay 24.00 each.

Tips

  • Agree the split before you leave to avoid awkward conversations afterwards.
  • Round up the per-person amount if it makes paying in cash easier.
  • Use real consumption from your trip computer rather than the brochure figure.

Frequently asked questions

How is the shared cost calculated?

Fuel = distance × consumption (L/100 km ÷ 100, or miles ÷ mpg for US gallons) × price. Add tolls and parking, then divide the total by the people paying. For 400 km at 7.5 L/100 km and 1.80 a litre, fuel is 54.00; with 18.00 of tolls and parking the total is 72.00, or 18.00 each for four people.

What does "driver rides free" do?

It divides the total only among the passengers, so with four people in the car three pay. The driver pays nothing. Without it the driver counts as one of the people sharing.

Are tolls and parking doubled on a round trip?

No. Only the distance is doubled. Enter tolls and parking for the whole journey, there and back.

Does it include wear on the car?

No. It covers fuel, tolls and parking only. Some drivers add an allowance for wear and tear; you can include it by adding it to the tolls or parking figure.
