Color lighten and darken

Enter a color, choose lighten or darken, set the amount and pick the color space. You get the adjusted color and four more steps in the same direction, each with a HEX code.

HSL lightness is a simple formula on the RGB values; equal steps can look uneven between different hues.

Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Enter a color in HEX, rgb(), hsl(), oklch() or as a CSS name.
  2. Choose Lighten or Darken, the amount and the color space.
  3. Copy the first result or the whole list of five steps.

How it works

HSL: the color is converted to hue, saturation and lightness; lightness changes by the amount times the step number (10, 20, 30 …) and is kept between 0 and 100. OKLCH: the same is done with OKLCH lightness (Björn Ottosson’s perceptual model), keeping hue and chroma; if the result does not fit in sRGB, chroma is lowered by bisection. Results are rounded to whole 0–255 channel values.

Example

#3366cc is hsl(220, 60%, 50%). Lightened by 10 in HSL the five steps are #5c85d6, #85a3e0, #adc2eb, #d6e0f5 and #ffffff. Darkened by 10 they are #2952a3, #1f3d7a, #142952, #0a1429 and #000000.

Tips

  • For hover and pressed states, small amounts of 5 to 10 points are usually enough.
  • Lightening far enough always ends in white, so use the tints and shades generator if you want a gradual mix with white or black.
  • Check text on the new color with a contrast checker.

Frequently asked questions

What does 10 percent mean here?

It is ten percentage points added to or taken from the lightness value, not ten percent of the current value. In HSL a color at 50 percent lightness becomes 60 percent when lightened by 10.

Should I use HSL or OKLCH?

HSL is the familiar one and matches the CSS hsl() function. OKLCH is built around how people see lightness, so a step of 10 looks closer to the same size for blue, yellow or green. Use OKLCH when you build a scale of related colors.

Why does the color stop changing at some point?

Lightness is limited to the range 0 to 100 percent. At 100 the color is white and at 0 it is black, so later steps repeat those values.

Why can an OKLCH result look less colorful?

Very light or very dark versions of a strong color may not exist in the sRGB range of a normal screen. The tool keeps the hue and lightness and lowers the chroma until the color fits.
