Hooke's law calculator

Choose what to find, enter the other two values and pick the units. The calculator applies Hooke's law F = k × x and shows the elastic potential energy stored in the stretched or compressed spring, ½ × k × x².

How to use it

  1. Choose what to find: force, spring constant or extension.
  2. Enter the two known values and pick their units.
  3. Read the result in the unit you picked, the energy stored and k in N/m.

Formulas

  • Force: F = k × x.
  • Spring constant: k = F ÷ x. Extension: x = F ÷ k.
  • Elastic energy: E = ½ × k × x², in joules.

Worked example

A spring with k = 200 N/m stretched by 5 cm: F = 200 × 0.05 = 10 N, and it stores ½ × 200 × 0.05² = 0.25 J.

A load of 50 N compresses a spring by 25 mm: k = 50 ÷ 0.025 = 2,000 N/m, which is 2 N/mm, and the stored energy is 0.625 J.

Tips and limits

  • Stay in the elastic range. Past the elastic limit the spring deforms permanently and the law no longer holds.
  • Measure from rest length. x is the change in length, not the total length of the spring.
  • Springs in series and parallel. Two equal springs side by side are twice as stiff; one after the other, half as stiff.

Frequently asked questions

What does Hooke's law say?

Within its elastic limit, a spring's force is proportional to how far it is stretched or compressed, F = k × x. The spring constant k tells how stiff the spring is, in newtons per metre.

Why is Hooke's law sometimes written F = −kx?

The minus sign shows that the spring pushes back against the displacement. This calculator works with magnitudes, so all values are positive.

How much energy does a spring store?

E = ½ × k × x². A 200 N/m spring stretched 5 cm stores ½ × 200 × 0.05² = 0.25 J. Doubling the extension stores four times the energy.

How do I convert N/mm to N/m?

Multiply by 1000. Spring catalogues often give rates in N/mm or lbf/in; pick that unit and the calculator converts it. 1 lbf/in is about 175.13 N/m.
