Words to number converter

Paste numbers spelled out in words, one per line, and get them as digits. It reads anything from zero to sextillions, “and” in British style, decimals with “point”, negatives, ordinals like “twenty-first” and years like “nineteen eighty-four”. Switch to text mode to replace number words inside sentences.

Input

Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Paste or type the numbers in words, one per line.
  2. Choose whether to group thousands in the output.
  3. For words inside sentences, switch the input to “Numbers inside text”.
  4. Copy the digits.

How it reads a number

The words are split at the largest scale word: the part before it is multiplied by the scale and the part after it is added, each part read the same way. So “two hundred thousand five hundred seven” is (2 × 100) × 1000 + (5 × 100 + 7) = 200507. Below a hundred, a tens word may be followed by a unit (“ninety-nine”); teens stand alone. Anything else, like two units in a row, is rejected rather than guessed.

Examples

Words Digits
one thousand two hundred thirty-four 1234
nine hundred and ninety-nine 999
twenty-first 21st
three point one four 3.14
two point five billion 2500000000
nineteen eighty-four 1984
minus seven hundred and fifty -750

Tips

  • Check the spelling of forty (not “fourty”) and ninety.
  • “Oh” works for zero in decimals and years: “one point oh five” → 1.05, “nineteen oh five” → 1905.

Frequently asked questions

Which numbers can it read?

Whole numbers from zero up to the sextillions (short scale: a billion is 10⁹), with or without “and” and hyphens; decimals with “point” and one word per digit (“three point one four”); negatives with “minus” or “negative”; ordinals such as “first”, “twenty-second” or “hundredth”, which keep their suffix (21st); and years read in pairs, like “nineteen eighty-four” or “twenty twenty-six”.

Can it read “2.5 million” or “a hundred”?

Yes. Digits followed by a scale word are multiplied out exactly (“2.5 million” → 2500000), and “a” before hundred, thousand or million counts as one. “Two point five billion” works the same way.

What does text mode do?

It finds runs of number words inside sentences and replaces each with digits, leaving the rest of the text alone: “We sold twenty-five cars and one hundred bikes” becomes “We sold 25 cars and 100 bikes”. Words like “one” used as a pronoun (“no one”) are converted too, so read the result.

Does it work with other languages?

It also reads Russian and Spanish number words in the nominative form (две тысячи двадцать шесть, mil quinientos veintiuno). The language is detected per number.

Why do I get an error?

Either a word is not a number word (a typo such as “fourty”, which should be “forty”), or the words do not form one number, such as “five six” or “two million three million”. The message gives the line number.
