Markdown to HTML converter

Type or paste Markdown and copy the HTML it produces. Raw HTML in your text is escaped and dangerous link types are removed, so the output is safe to drop into a page.

Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Paste your Markdown on the left.
  2. Copy the HTML from the right. Tick Wrap in a full HTML page if you want a complete document with <html>, <head> and <body>.
  3. Tick Line breaks become <br> if a single Enter in your text should start a new line, as in chat apps.

A short example

## Tools
- **Fast**
- *Free*

becomes

<h2>Tools</h2>
<ul>
<li><strong>Fast</strong></li>
<li><em>Free</em></li>
</ul>

Safety

The output is HTML source text. Special characters in your text (<, >, &, ") are escaped, and link addresses are checked before they are used. Still, if you publish HTML from untrusted authors, sanitise it again on your server: this tool is not a security boundary.

Tips

Leave a blank line before lists and tables, and two spaces or a backslash at the end of a line for a forced line break.

Frequently asked questions

Is raw HTML in my Markdown kept?

No. Every < is turned into &lt;, so a <script> tag or an onerror attribute you paste shows up as harmless text. That is the safe default for content that someone else wrote.

Which links are allowed?

Links and images with http, https, mailto or tel addresses and relative paths. Addresses such as javascript:, data: and vbscript: are dropped: the link text stays but there is no anchor or image.

Which Markdown features work?

Headings (# and underline style), paragraphs, bold, italic, strikethrough, inline code, fenced and indented code blocks, block quotes, nested bullet and numbered lists, task list items, tables with alignment, horizontal rules, links, images and autolinks in angle brackets.

What is not supported?

Reference-style links, footnotes, HTML blocks and bare URLs that are not wrapped in angle brackets or link syntax. Those parts are output as plain text.

Does it follow CommonMark exactly?

It covers the everyday subset of CommonMark and GitHub Flavored Markdown. Unusual edge cases, such as deeply mixed list indentation, can differ from a full implementation.
