Slug generator

Paste a title, a heading or a list of them, one per line, and get slugs ready for URLs and file names. Accented letters are simplified, symbols are removed and words are joined with the separator you choose.

Separator

Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste one title per line.
  2. Pick a separator: hyphen, underscore or dot.
  3. Copy the slugs.

How it works

Each line is processed on its own:

  1. The text is lowercased and split into base letters and accent marks (Unicode NFKD); the marks are removed.
  2. A few special letters are replaced: ß → ss, æ → ae, œ → oe, ø → o, đ and ð → d, ł → l, þ → th.
  3. Apostrophes are deleted.
  4. Everything that is not a letter or a digit is treated as a break. Runs of breaks become one separator, and no separator is left at the start or end.

Example: Crème Brûlée: 2 Ways! becomes creme-brulee-2-ways.

Tips

  • Keep slugs short: drop words like “the” and “a” yourself if the title is long.
  • Do not change a published slug without a redirect from the old address.
  • Numbers are kept, so “Top 10 Tips” gives top-10-tips.

Frequently asked questions

What is a URL slug?

The slug is the readable part of a web address that names the page, such as crème-brûlée-tips becoming creme-brulee-tips in example.com/creme-brulee-tips. Short, lowercase, hyphenated slugs are easy to read and share.

Hyphen or underscore?

Google's documentation recommends hyphens to separate words in URLs, because it treats them as word separators. Underscores suit file names, identifiers and some frameworks.

How are accents handled?

Letters are decomposed (Unicode NFKD) and the accent marks are dropped, so é becomes e and ü becomes u. A few letters that do not decompose are spelled out, for example ß as ss, æ as ae and ø as o.

What happens to other alphabets?

Letters and digits of any script are kept and lowercased, so a Russian or Greek title gives a slug in that script. Many sites prefer to transliterate to Latin letters; this tool does not.

Does it remove apostrophes?

Yes. "Don't" becomes dont instead of being split into don and t. All other punctuation and symbols act as word breaks.
