Hash generator

Type or paste text and see its MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512 hashes at once, as hexadecimal. The text is hashed as UTF-8 in your browser and never leaves your device.

MD5 and SHA-1 are broken for security purposes: use them only for checksums and compatibility. For passwords use a slow password hash such as Argon2 or bcrypt, not these.

Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste the text. All four hashes update as you type.
  2. Choose uppercase if the system you compare against writes hex in capitals.
  3. Copy the hash you need.

How it works

The text is converted to bytes with UTF-8, then each algorithm turns those bytes into a fixed-length fingerprint. A small change in the input changes the whole output. The result is written in hexadecimal: 32 characters for MD5, 40 for SHA-1, 64 for SHA-256 and 128 for SHA-512.

Known results to check against:

Text MD5
(empty) d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e
abc 900150983cd24fb0d6963f7d28e17f72

The SHA-256 of abc begins ba7816bf8f01cfea….

Tips

  • Compare hashes by looking at the whole string, or paste both into a text comparison tool.
  • Hashes of the empty string are often seen in logs; that is the value in the first row above for MD5.
  • For password storage, never use a plain hash; use a dedicated password hashing function.

Frequently asked questions

Which hash should I use?

Use SHA-256 or SHA-512 for integrity checks and signatures. MD5 and SHA-1 have known collision attacks, so they are fine for spotting accidental changes but not for security.

Can a hash be reversed to get the text?

Not directly, because a hash function is one-way. Short or common inputs can still be found by trying guesses, which is why plain hashes are a poor way to store passwords.

Why does my hash differ from another tool's?

The text is hashed as UTF-8 bytes, exactly as typed. A trailing newline, different line endings or another encoding change every character of the result. Check for hidden spaces first.

Can I hash a file?

This tool hashes text only. A file's hash covers its bytes, which a pasted text box cannot reproduce exactly.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. SHA hashes use your browser's built-in Web Crypto, and MD5 is calculated by code in this page.
