Password generator

Create a random password of up to 64 characters from letters, digits and symbols. It is generated on your device with the browser's cryptographic random source and is never sent anywhere.

Your password

Strength: very strong · 104 bits of entropy

Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Set the length with the slider.
  2. Choose the character types. Leaving out look-alike characters helps if you will read the password aloud or type it from paper.
  3. Press Copy, or New password for another one. Any change of settings makes a new password.

How strength is measured

For a random password, strength depends only on its length and on how many different characters it can use:

entropy = length × log₂(number of possible characters)

With all four types there are 89 possible characters (26 + 26 + 10 + 27 symbols), so each character adds about 6.5 bits. A 16-character password has about 103 bits.

Entropy Strength
under 40 bits weak
40–59 bits fair
60–79 bits strong
80 bits and more very strong

Good habits

  • Use a different password for every account; a leak on one site then does not open the others.
  • Keep passwords in a password manager instead of a note or a spreadsheet.
  • Turn on two-factor authentication where it is offered: even a strong password can be phished.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a password be?

For accounts, 16 characters of mixed letters, digits and symbols is a strong choice. Length matters more than complexity, so a longer password is better than a short one with more symbols.

Are the passwords really random?

Yes. They come from crypto.getRandomValues, the browser's cryptographically secure generator, with no bias towards any character. Each password includes at least one character of every type you selected.

Is the password stored or sent anywhere?

No. It is created in your browser and exists only on this page until you copy it. Use a password manager to keep it.

What do bits of entropy mean?

Entropy measures how hard a password is to guess. Each extra bit doubles the number of guesses needed; 80 bits or more is out of reach of any practical attack on a random password.
