Breadcrumb schema generator

Type the trail from the home page to the current page, one page per line with its address, and copy the BreadcrumbList markup. Paths that start with / are joined to your site address, so you do not need to repeat the domain.

Used for paths that start with /. Leave empty if every line has a full URL.
One page per line: Name | address. The last page (the current one) may have no address.

4 items.

Paste the script into the page's HTML, in head or body. The trail must match the breadcrumbs visitors see on the page.

Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Enter the site address, for example https://example.com.
  2. Write the trail, one page per line: the name as shown on the page, a | (or a tab) and the address.
  3. Leave the address off the last line if it is the current page.
  4. Copy the script and paste it into the page.

How it works

Each line becomes a ListItem with position counted from 1, name and item (the URL). A path starting with / is added to the site address without a doubled slash; full http:// or https:// addresses are used as typed. The list is wrapped in a BreadcrumbList with "@context": "https://schema.org" and put into a <script type="application/ld+json"> tag. The < character is written as <, so a name cannot close the script tag.

Example

With the site address https://example.com and the lines

Home | /
Books | /books/
Science fiction | /books/sci-fi/
The Left Hand of Darkness

the result has 4 items. The first is {"@type": "ListItem", "position": 1, "name": "Home", "item": "https://example.com/"}, the third points to https://example.com/books/sci-fi/, and the fourth has only a position and a name.

Tips

  • Use the same names as the visible breadcrumbs, not page titles with the site name.
  • Use the canonical URLs of the pages, with the same protocol and trailing slash as your links.
  • One trail per page path is enough; the list does not need to include every parent category.

Frequently asked questions

What does BreadcrumbList markup do?

It describes the page's position in the site hierarchy in a form search engines read. Google may show the trail instead of the bare URL in search results.

Does the last item need a URL?

No. The last item is the page itself, and Google's documentation allows leaving its item out. Every other item needs the address of its page.

Should the home page be the first item?

Usually yes, but it is up to you: the markup should repeat the breadcrumbs shown on the page. If your visible trail starts with a category, start the list there too.

Can one page have several trails?

Yes. A product listed in two categories can carry two BreadcrumbList blocks. Generate each one separately and paste both.

How do I check the result?

Paste the page URL or the code into Google's Rich Results Test or the Schema Markup Validator; both show the parsed list and any errors.
