How to use it

  1. Enter how many of each drink you have in a day.
  2. Leave the limit at 400 mg or set your own.
  3. Read the estimated total, what is left under the limit and the share used.

How it works

The total is the sum of count × typical caffeine per serving:

Drink Typical caffeine
Brewed coffee, 8 fl oz 96 mg
Espresso, 1 fl oz 64 mg
Black tea, 8 fl oz 47 mg
Cola, 12 fl oz 34 mg
Energy drink, 8.4 fl oz 79 mg

These figures are approximate typical values. The share is total ÷ limit.

Worked example

Two cups of coffee and one cup of tea: 2 × 96 + 47 = 239 mg. Under a 400 mg limit that leaves 161 mg, or about 60% of the limit used.

Good to know

Caffeine stays in the body for hours, so late drinks can affect sleep. This is general information, not medical advice.

Frequently asked questions

How much caffeine is too much?

The US FDA says 400 mg a day, about four or five cups of coffee, is not generally associated with negative effects for most healthy adults. Sensitivity varies, and people who are pregnant, have heart conditions or take certain medicines are usually advised to have less, so ask a doctor.

How accurate are the amounts per drink?

They are typical, rounded figures, about 96 mg for a cup of brewed coffee, 64 mg for an espresso shot, 47 mg for black tea, 34 mg for a can of cola and 79 mg for an energy drink. Real drinks vary widely with brand, bean, brewing time and serving size, so treat the total as an approximation. Check the label when you can.

Can I change the daily limit?

Yes. The default is 400 mg, but you can set a lower number if your doctor suggested one or if you simply prefer to keep your intake down.

Does it count decaf, green tea or chocolate?

No. Decaf still has a little caffeine, and green tea, chocolate and some medicines contain some too. Those are not included, so the real total can be higher.
