Contraction timer

Press the big button when a contraction starts and again when it ends. The table shows how long each lasted and how far apart they are, and the summary averages the last hour. Everything stays in this browser.

How to use it

  1. Press Contraction started when a contraction begins.
  2. Press Contraction ended when it fades.
  3. Repeat. The table lists each contraction newest first, and Last hour shows the count, average length and average time apart.
  4. Use Export CSV to save the log or share it with your midwife.

How the numbers are worked out

  • Length is end time minus start time.
  • Time apart is the start of a contraction minus the start of the one before it.
  • The last-hour averages use finished contractions that began in the past 60 minutes.

Worked example

Three contractions start at 10:00, 10:05 and 10:10 and each lasts 60 seconds. The gaps are 5 minutes and 5 minutes, so the averages are 1:00 long and 5:00 apart.

Notes

This is a stopwatch with a memory, not a medical device. Call your midwife, doctor or local emergency number whenever you are unsure.

Frequently asked questions

How is the time between contractions measured?

From the start of one contraction to the start of the next, which is the usual way midwives count it. The first contraction has no previous one, so its gap is blank.

What is the 5-1-1 rule?

A commonly given rule of thumb that contractions are about 5 minutes apart, last about 1 minute and have continued for about 1 hour. It is general information that patient guides repeat; your care team's instructions come first.

Does this tell me when to go to the hospital?

No. It only measures and averages what you tap. Decisions about when to call or go in belong to you and your midwife or doctor, who know your pregnancy.

Is my data stored anywhere?

Only in your browser's local storage on this device. Nothing is uploaded, and clearing site data or using another device starts a new log.

What if I forget to tap the end?

The contraction keeps timing until you press the button again. Use Clear all to start over if the log is wrong.
