Wilks score calculator

Enter your bodyweight and your squat, bench press and deadlift total to get a bodyweight-adjusted score. Choose the original Wilks formula, the revised Wilks 2020 or DOTS. The page lists the polynomial for each so you can check the numbers.

How to use it

  1. Choose units, category (men or women) and the formula.
  2. Enter your bodyweight and the sum of your best squat, bench press and deadlift.
  3. Read the score and the coefficient that multiplied your total.

Formulas

With bodyweight x in kilograms, the coefficient is a scale divided by a polynomial:

  • Wilks (original): 500 ÷ (a + bx + cx² + dx³ + ex⁴ + fx⁵). Men: a = −216.0475144, b = 16.2606339, c = −0.002388645, d = −0.00113732, e = 7.01863e−6, f = −1.291e−8. Women: a = 594.31747775582, b = −27.23842536447, c = 0.82112226871, d = −0.00930733913, e = 0.00004731582, f = −0.00000009054.
  • Wilks 2020: 600 ÷ the same kind of polynomial with revised coefficients. Men: a = 47.4617885411949, b = 8.47206137941125, c = 0.073694103462609, d = −0.00139583381094385, e = 7.07665973070743e−6, f = −1.20804336482315e−8. Women: a = −125.425539779509, b = 13.7121941940668, c = −0.0330725063103405, d = −0.0010504000506583, e = 9.38773881462799e−6, f = −2.3334613884954e−8.
  • DOTS: 500 ÷ (a + bx + cx² + dx³ + ex⁴). Men: a = −307.75076, b = 24.0900756, c = −0.1918759221, d = 0.0007391293, e = −0.000001093. Women: a = −57.96288, b = 13.6175032, c = −0.1126655495, d = 0.0005158568, e = −0.0000010706.

The score is the total times the coefficient. Pounds are converted to kilograms first.

Worked example

A man of 80 kg with a 500 kg total, using DOTS: the polynomial gives −307.75076 + 1927.20605 − 1228.00590 + 378.43420 − 44.76928 = 725.1143. The coefficient is 500 ÷ 725.1143 = 0.6895, and the score is 500 × 0.6895 = 344.8. The original Wilks coefficient at 80 kg is 0.6827 (score 341.3) and Wilks 2020 gives 0.8191 (score 409.6).

Limits

  • A score compares lifters only roughly. It does not account for age, height or training experience.
  • Always cite which formula you used when comparing scores.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Wilks score?

It is a coefficient that multiplies your powerlifting total so lifters of different bodyweights can be compared. A lighter lifter lifts less in absolute terms, so the coefficient is larger for lower bodyweights. The original formula multiplies the total by 500 divided by a fifth-degree polynomial in bodyweight.

What is the difference between Wilks, Wilks 2020 and DOTS?

They all scale the total by a polynomial of bodyweight, with separate coefficients for men and women. Wilks 2020 is a revision with new coefficients and a numerator of 600, so its scores run higher than the original. DOTS uses a fourth-degree polynomial and 500. The numbers are not interchangeable between formulas.

Why is bodyweight limited to a range?

The polynomials were fitted on data within a range of bodyweights and give odd results outside it. This calculator accepts 40 to 200 kg for men and 40 to 150 kg for women, which keeps the curves in a sensible zone.

Should the total be raw or equipped?

The formulas only scale a number. They do not know whether it was lifted raw or with equipment, so compare totals made under the same rules.
