How to use it
- Choose what to calculate: pace, finish time or distance.
- Choose kilometres or miles. Switching converts what you have entered.
- Enter the other two values, or tap a race preset to fill in the distance.
- Read the result, the speed, the pace in the other unit, and the splits table.
Formulas
- pace = time ÷ distance
- time = pace × distance
- distance = time ÷ pace
- speed (km/h or mph) = 3,600 ÷ pace in seconds
One mile is exactly 1.609344 km. Race distances: 5 km, 10 km, half marathon 21.0975 km, marathon 42.195 km. Times are rounded to the nearest second.
Worked example
You want to run a marathon at 5:00 per km: 42.195 × 300 s = 12,658.5 s, a finish time of 3:30:59. In miles that pace is 300 × 1.609344 = 483 s, about 8:03 per mile, at a speed of 12 km/h. A 10 km race in 50:00 is the same pace.
Tips
- For a goal race, start with your target time and the distance to get the pace you need, then check the splits at each kilometre or mile.
- Long-run and recovery paces are slower than race pace; a coach or training plan can tell you how much.
- GPS watches often measure a race a little long, because you rarely run the shortest line. Your watch pace may look slightly faster than your official pace.
