BBQ meat calculator

Enter how many adults and children are coming and how hungry they are. The calculator gives the raw weight of meat to buy, the rough cooked weight and the amount of side dishes. The portions are rules of thumb, so add a little extra for a crowd that likes to eat.

How to use it

  1. Enter the number of adults and children.
  2. Choose appetite and whether the meat is boneless or bone-in.
  3. Set the number of side dishes and read the amounts to buy.

How it works

Portions = adults + children × 0.5. Raw meat = portions × meat per adult (× 1.5 for bone-in). Cooked meat = raw × 0.75. Sides = portions × 100 g × the number of sides. All are rules of thumb.

Worked example

8 adults and 4 children is 10 portions. At an average 8 oz boneless: 80 oz, which is 5 lb (2.27 kg) raw and about 3.75 lb cooked. With three sides: 3 kg of side dishes.

Tips

  • If you serve several kinds of meat, split the total between them.
  • Buy a little extra when guests are likely to take second helpings.
  • Cook meat to a safe internal temperature and keep raw and cooked food apart.

Frequently asked questions

How much meat per person for a barbecue?

A common rule of thumb is about 6 oz (170 g) of raw boneless meat for a light eater, 8 oz (227 g) for an average one and 10 oz (283 g) for a hearty one. This calculator uses those figures.

How do children and bones change the amount?

Here a child counts as half an adult. Bone-in cuts such as ribs or wings are multiplied by 1.5, a rule of thumb because the bone weighs but is not eaten.

Why is the cooked weight lower?

Meat loses water and fat on the grill. As a rule of thumb the cooked weight is about three quarters of the raw weight, and it varies by cut and how well it is done.

How are the side dishes counted?

Each side dish is estimated at 100 g per adult portion, multiplied by the number of sides. With several sides people take less of each, so you could reduce it.
