Kids allowance calculator
Choose a rule: an amount for each year of age every week, the same every month, or a fixed weekly amount of your own. The calculator shows what that comes to per week, month and year and splits it into save, spend and share jars. Every number is yours to change.
Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
How to use it
- Enter the child’s age and pick a rule.
- Enter the amount: per year of age, or the weekly amount if you chose the fixed rule.
- Set the save, spend and share percentages. They must add up to 100.
How it works
Week = age × amount for the weekly rule; month = age × amount for the monthly rule; week = amount for the fixed rule. A year is 52 weeks, and a month is a twelfth of it. Each jar is its percentage of the payment.
Worked example
A 10-year-old on 1 per year of age per week gets 10 a week, 520 a year and about 43.33 a month. With a 40, 50, 10 split that is 4 to save, 5 to spend and 1 to share each week, and 208 saved in a year.
Good to know
The age-based rule is only one popular idea. Some families tie pay to chores, others do not; decide what the money is meant to cover first.
Frequently asked questions
How much allowance should a child get?
There is no correct figure. Families differ in income, in what the allowance must cover and in their values. One popular rule of thumb is a set amount, often 1, for each year of age each week, so a 10-year-old gets 10 a week. Treat it as a starting point and adjust.
How are the weekly, monthly and yearly amounts related?
A year is 52 weeks and a month is a twelfth of a year. With the monthly rule the yearly amount is age × amount × 12, and the weekly figure is that divided by 52.
What is the save, spend and share split?
It divides each payment into three jars. The default 40, 50 and 10 percent is just an example; the figures can be any split that adds up to 100. Many families use it to teach saving and giving alongside spending.
Which currency does it use?
Any. Enter the amount in your own currency and the results use the same one. Nothing is converted.
