Dog pregnancy calculator
Enter the date your dog mated. The calculator estimates when the puppies are due. Dog pregnancy lasts about 63 days, but counted from mating it can run anywhere from about 58 to 68 days, so treat the date as approximate and ask your vet.

How to use it
- Enter the mating date. If there were several, use the first or ask your vet.
- Read the estimated due date and the 58 to 68 day window.
- Use the milestone dates as reminders for vet visits and preparation.
How it works
Estimated due date = mating date + 63 days. The window is the mating date + 58 days to + 68 days. Other dates are the mating date + 28, 45 and 55 days. Everything is approximate.
Worked example
Mating on 1 September 2026: estimated due date 3 November 2026, the window 29 October to 8 November, a vet check around 29 September and an X-ray around 16 October.
Tips
- Keep your vet’s emergency number nearby when the window opens.
- Feed and exercise a pregnant dog as your vet recommends.
- Large and small litters can both arrive early or late in the window.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a dog pregnant?
About 63 days. Counted from the day of mating the length varies, roughly 58 to 68 days, because sperm can survive for days and the egg is released at a different time from mating. This tool gives 63 days as the estimate and 58 to 68 as the window.
How accurate is the due date?
It is an estimate only. If the mating date is uncertain or several matings occurred, the real date can differ. Your vet can narrow it down with an ultrasound or hormone tests.
When can a vet confirm the pregnancy?
An ultrasound at about four weeks after mating is a common time to check, and an X-ray around day 45 shows the puppies' skeletons so they can be counted. These days are guides: your vet will advise.
When should I prepare for the birth?
Many breeders have the whelping area ready a few days before the earliest likely date. The tool shows day 55 as a rule-of-thumb reminder. Call your vet if labour does not start or if something seems wrong.
