Party drink calculator

Enter the number of guests, how many hours the party runs, the share of guests who drink alcohol and how you expect them to split between beer, wine and spirits. The calculator returns the drinks and bottles to buy using the common two-drinks-first-hour rule of thumb.

How to use it

  1. Enter the number of guests and the length of the party in hours.
  2. Set the share of guests who drink alcohol, and the beer and wine shares of those drinks (the rest is spirits).
  3. Set how many soft drinks or glasses of water each guest will have per hour.

How it works

Each drinking guest has 2 drinks in the first hour plus 1 for every further hour (a party shorter than an hour counts pro rata). Total drinks = guests × share who drink × drinks per drinker. Wine counts 5 glasses per bottle and spirits 1.5 US fl oz per drink in 750 mL bottles. Everything is rounded up.

Worked example

30 guests, 4 hours, 80% drink: each drinker has 2 + 3 = 5 drinks, so 30 × 0.8 × 5 = 120 drinks. With 40% beer, 40% wine and 20% spirits that is 48 beers, 48 glasses of wine (10 bottles) and 24 spirit drinks (2 bottles). Soft drinks at 1 per guest per hour: 120. Ice: about 30 lb.

Tips

  • If the party has a toast, add a glass of sparkling wine per guest on top.
  • Buy a little extra of what keeps: unopened wine, spirits and canned drinks can be kept or returned.
  • Drive safely: this tool plans quantities, not safe limits.

Frequently asked questions

How many drinks per person per hour?

A common rule of thumb is two drinks for each drinking guest in the first hour and one drink per hour after that. The calculator uses it; real consumption depends on the crowd, the time of day and the food.

How many glasses are in a bottle of wine?

About five 5 oz (150 mL) glasses in a standard 750 mL bottle. Spirits are counted as 1.5 US fl oz (about 44 mL) drinks, roughly 17 to a 750 mL bottle.

What is the split of beer, wine and spirits?

The shares you enter set the split; spirits take whatever is left after beer and wine. With nothing else to go on, many hosts start near 40% beer, 40% wine and 20% spirits.

How much ice do I need?

The calculator allows about 1 lb (0.45 kg) of ice per guest, a common rule of thumb for drinks. Add more for hot weather or if you are chilling bottles in tubs.
