Cat age calculator

Enter your cat's age in years and months to see its rough equivalent in human years. The chart used is a widely quoted rule of thumb, not a medical measure.

How to use it

  1. Enter your cat’s age in whole years and months.
  2. Read the human-age equivalent.

How it works

This is the common chart, a rule of thumb rather than a scientific model. Up to 1 year: age × 15. From 1 to 2 years: 15 + (age − 1) × 9. After 2 years: 24 + (age − 2) × 4.

Worked example

A 5-year-old cat: 24 + 3 × 4 = 36 human years. A 15-year-old cat: 24 + 13 × 4 = 76.

Tips

  • For care questions, such as diet and check-ups for senior cats, ask your vet. Age alone does not tell you the cat’s health.
  • Dogs have their own chart: try the dog age calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Is one cat year really seven human years?

No. That is a myth. Cats mature quickly: the common chart counts about 15 human years for the first cat year and 24 by the second.

How are ages between birthdays counted?

Inside the first two years the calculator interpolates in a straight line, so a 6-month-old kitten is 7.5 and an 18-month-old cat is 19.5. After two years each year adds 4.

Where does this chart come from?

It is a common rule of thumb repeated by many vets and pet organisations, so treat it as approximate. Cats age differently by breed, health and lifestyle.

What about dogs?

Dogs follow a different pattern depending on size. Use the dog age calculator for them.
