How to use it

  1. Choose units. Gauge is counted over 4 inches (US) or 10 cm (metric).
  2. Enter the stitches and rows you counted in the swatch.
  3. Enter the width and height you want, and a stitch multiple if your pattern needs one.

How it works

Stitches = (swatch stitches ÷ swatch width) × finished width, rounded to the nearest multiple. Rows are computed the same way with the swatch row count and the height.

Worked example

Gauge of 22 stitches and 30 rows over 10 cm. For a piece 50 cm wide: 22 ÷ 10 × 50 = 110 stitches. For 60 cm tall: 30 ÷ 10 × 60 = 180 rows. With a multiple of 4: 110 ÷ 4 = 27.5, which rounds to 28 × 4 = 112 stitches.

Tips

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure gauge?

Knit a swatch of at least 6 in (15 cm) square in your pattern stitch, wash and dry it as you will the finished piece, then count stitches and rows over a 4 in (10 cm) span in the middle.

What is a stitch multiple?

Some stitch patterns need the cast-on to be a multiple of a number, such as 4 stitches plus 2 edge stitches. Enter the multiple and the result is rounded to the nearest one. For extra edge stitches add them yourself.

Why must the swatch be washed?

Many yarns relax or shrink when washed. Measuring after washing gives the gauge the finished piece will really have.

Does this account for seams?

No. Add seam allowances yourself, or enter the width and height of the knitted piece.
