How to use it

  1. Enter the stitch width and height from the chart.
  2. Enter the fabric count and whether you stitch over one or two threads.
  3. Set the margin, then read the design size and the fabric to cut.

How it works

Stitches per inch = count ÷ threads stitched over. Design size = stitches ÷ stitches per inch (1 in = 2.54 cm). Fabric size = design size + 2 × margin.

Worked example

A 100 × 120 stitch chart on 14-count Aida: 100 ÷ 14 = 7.14 in by 120 ÷ 14 = 8.57 in. With a 3 in margin the fabric is 13.14 × 14.57 in.

Tips

  • A smaller count gives a bigger design: 11-count is bigger than 18-count.
  • Allow extra if you will mount the piece on a stretcher or into a frame.

Frequently asked questions

What is fabric count?

It is the number of threads or Aida blocks per inch. 14-count Aida has 14 squares per inch, so 14 stitches fit in an inch.

How do I use linen or evenweave?

On linen you usually stitch over two threads. A 28-count linen worked over two threads gives 14 stitches per inch, the same as 14-count Aida. Choose “2” and enter the thread count.

How much margin should I leave?

Two to three inches (5–8 cm) on each side leaves room for a hoop or frame and mounting. Default is 3 in or 7.5 cm.

Does the count include the half-stitch borders?

No. The design size is the stitch count divided by stitches per inch; it ignores the edge of the cloth.
