Frequently asked questions
How are mahjong points calculated from han and fu?
Base points are fu × 2^(han + 2). A non-dealer winning by ron receives 4 × base, a dealer receives 6 × base, and each payment is rounded up to the next 100. On a tsumo a non-dealer is paid 2 × base by the dealer and 1 × base by each of the others, a dealer is paid 2 × base by each player.
Where do the limits start?
Base points are capped at 2000, which is mangan. That cap is reached at 5 han, or at 4 han with 40 fu or more, or 3 han with 70 fu or more. 6 to 7 han is haneman (3000 base), 8 to 10 baiman (4000), 11 to 12 sanbaiman (6000) and 13 han or more counts as yakuman (8000 base).
Does the tool include yakuman from special hands?
A hand made of a yakuman yaku such as thirteen orphans is worth 8000 base, so enter 13 han. Double yakuman and the other optional rules are not calculated; multiply by hand if your table plays them.
What about rounding mangan at 30 fu 4 han?
This calculator does not round up 30 fu 4 han or 60 fu 3 han to mangan, so it shows 7,700 and 7,700 respectively for a non-dealer ron. Some tables play that optional rule, called kiriage mangan.
What is honba?
Honba are repeat counters added after a dealer win or a draw. Each one adds 300 points to a ron, or 100 from each of the three losers on a tsumo, on top of the hand value.
