Puppy weight predictor

Enter your puppy's weight and age in weeks to get a rough guess of its adult weight. It is a simple rule of thumb, so treat the answer as an estimate and the range as wide.

How to use it

  1. Choose units and enter the puppy’s current weight.
  2. Enter its age in weeks (a month is about 4.3 weeks).
  3. Read the estimate and the range.

How it works

Estimated adult weight = current weight ÷ age in weeks × 52. The low and high values are 80% and 120% of that. This is a crude rule of thumb, not a breed-specific growth model.

Worked example

A puppy of 8 kg at 16 weeks: 8 ÷ 16 × 52 = 26 kg, with a range of 20.8–31.2 kg.

Tips

  • Weigh at the same time of day, before a meal, and repeat every week or two.
  • Use the estimate for planning (crate size, food), not for deciding how much to feed. For portions see the pet food portion calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is this?

Not very. It assumes the puppy keeps growing at an average pace. Growth rates differ between breeds, and giant breeds keep growing for 18 months or more. Treat the answer as a ballpark.

What is the formula?

Adult weight ≈ current weight ÷ age in weeks × 52. The ± 20% range is our own illustration of how loose the rule is, not a statistical interval.

What gives a better estimate?

The parents' adult weights, the breed standard, and your vet's growth chart for your puppy. A vet can also tell you whether the puppy is growing at a healthy pace.

Why only 8 to 52 weeks?

Younger puppies change too quickly for a simple rule, and by a year most small and medium dogs are close to their adult weight.
