Pattern scaling calculator

Enter the size of the original and the size you want, or a percentage, and get the scale factor to set on the copier. A second dimension is scaled with it.

Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Choose “Target size” or “Percentage”.
  2. Enter the original length of the dimension you care about and the size you want (or the percentage).
  3. Enter another dimension of the original to see how it changes.

How it works

Scale = new size ÷ original size. Every length is multiplied by the scale; area by the scale squared.

Worked example

A 10 cm motif that must be 12 cm: 12 ÷ 10 = 120%. A 15 cm edge becomes 18 cm, and the area is 1.44 times larger.

Tips

  • Large enlargements are often done in steps or on a plotter, since copiers have limits.
  • Check the result against the scale square or ruler printed on the pattern.

Frequently asked questions

How do I scale a pattern on a copier?

Find a length you want to change, divide the new size by the old one and multiply by 100. That is the zoom percentage. Check by measuring a known line on the copy.

Why does the area change more than the percentage?

Both width and height scale, so area changes by the square of the factor. Enlarging to 150% gives 2.25 times the area, which matters for paper and fabric needs.

Does it work for cross stitch and knitting charts?

Yes for the paper copy of the chart. Fabric size and stitch counts depend on the count or the gauge, so use the fabric and gauge calculators for those.

What units do I use?

Any, as long as the same unit is used in all boxes. The result is a ratio.
