How to use it

  1. Choose rugby union or rugby league.
  2. Enter the number of tries, conversions, penalty goals and drop goals.
  3. Enter the opponent’s score to see the margin and, for union, the table points.

Scoring values

Score Union League
Try 5 4
Conversion 2 2
Penalty goal 3 2
Drop goal 3 1

Worked example

Union: 4 tries, 4 conversions, 2 penalty goals and 1 drop goal = 20 + 8 + 6 + 3 = 37. The same scores in league are 16 + 8 + 4 + 1 = 29. A union side that scores 22 against 17 with three tries wins and gets 4 table points; with a fourth try it would get 5.

Tips

  • Check the laws of the current season, because scoring values have changed over the history of both codes.
  • If you only need a quick total, leave the opponent’s score at zero and ignore the table points.

Frequently asked questions

How many points is a try worth?

A try is 5 points in rugby union and 4 in rugby league. A conversion kick after the try adds 2 points in both codes.

What are penalty and drop goals worth?

In union both a penalty goal and a drop goal are worth 3 points. In league a penalty goal is worth 2 points and a drop goal, also called a field goal, is worth 1.

What about penalty tries?

A penalty try in union is awarded 7 points, which is the same as a try plus a conversion. Enter it as one try and one conversion.

How do bonus points work?

Many union competitions give 4 table points for a win, 2 for a draw and 0 for a loss. They add 1 bonus point for scoring four or more tries and 1 for losing by seven points or fewer. This is a common rule, not universal, so check your competition. League-table points are not shown for rugby league because they depend on the competition.

Why can't conversions exceed tries?

A conversion is only kicked after a try, so a team cannot score more conversions than tries.
