How to use it
- Enter the monthly rent and the move-in or move-out date.
- Choose how a day is counted.
- Read the prorated rent and the days charged.
How it works
Move in: days = days in month − day + 1. Move out: days = day of month. Rent per day is rent ÷ days in that month, or rent × 12 ÷ 365, or rent ÷ 30. Prorated rent = days × rent per day, up to one month’s rent.
Worked example
Rent 1,500, move in on 12 March (31 days): 20 days. Actual days: 1,500 ÷ 31 × 20 = 967.74. A 365-day year: 1,500 × 12 ÷ 365 = 49.32 a day, 986.30. A 30-day month: 50 a day, 1,000.
Tips
Frequently asked questions
How do I prorate rent?
Divide the monthly rent by the number of days in the month to get a daily rent, then multiply by the days you occupy. With rent 1,500 in a 31-day month and 20 days, 1,500 ÷ 31 × 20 = 967.74.
Which method should I use?
The one in your lease or that your landlord uses. The three options give slightly different results for the same dates, so the calculator shows each when you switch.
Are the move-in and move-out days both counted?
Here, yes: moving in on the 12th of a 31-day month counts the 12th through the 31st, 20 days. Some landlords do not count one of the days, so confirm what applies to you.
Can the amount be more than one month's rent?
No. The result is capped at a full month's rent, which matters with the 30-day method in a 31-day month.
