Enter the bill, the tip percent and how many people are paying. You get the tip, the total and what each person pays, and you can round each share up to a whole number.

How to use it

  1. Enter the bill amount.
  2. Enter the tip in percent.
  3. Enter how many people share the bill.
  4. Tick Round each share up if you want simple amounts; the tip absorbs the difference.

How it works

Tip = bill × tip% ÷ 100, total = bill + tip, and each share = total ÷ people. With rounding, each share is rounded up to the next whole unit, the total becomes share × people, and the tip is total − bill. The tip as a percent of the bill shows how much you actually left.

Worked example

Four friends have a bill of 120 and leave 15%. The tip is 18, the total 138, and each person pays 34.50. With rounding up, everyone pays 35, the total is 140 and the tip becomes 20, which is 16.67% of the bill.

Tips

  • Look for a “service charge” line first: if it is there, an extra tip is optional.
  • Splitting evenly is simplest; if people ordered very different amounts, run the calculator once per person with their own subtotal.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a tip?

Multiply the bill by the tip percent and divide by 100. A 15% tip on 120 is 120 × 15 ÷ 100 = 18, so the total is 138.

How much should I tip?

It depends on the country and the service. In US restaurants 15–20% is common; in many European countries a service charge is already in the bill or a small round-up is usual. Check the bill for a service charge before adding a tip.

Should the tip be on the amount before or after tax?

Many people tip on the amount before tax, which is a little less. The calculator tips on the amount you enter, so enter the pre-tax subtotal if that is your habit.

What does rounding up do?

Each person's share is raised to the next whole number and the extra goes to the tip. With 4 people and 34.50 each, everyone pays 35, the total becomes 140 and the tip 20 (16.67% of 120).
