Discount calculator
Enter a price and a discount to see what you pay and what you save. You can also stack a second discount on top of the first, or find the original price from a sale price.
Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
How to use it
- Choose what you need: the price after a discount, the price after two discounts in a row, or the original price.
- Enter the price and the discount in percent.
- Read what you pay, what you save and, for two discounts, the combined discount.
| Question |
Formula |
Example |
| Price after discount |
price × (1 − d ÷ 100) |
80 − 25% = 60 |
| Two discounts |
price × (1 − d1 ÷ 100) × (1 − d2 ÷ 100) |
100 − 20% − 10% = 72 |
| Original price |
sale price ÷ (1 − d ÷ 100) |
60 after 25% = 80 |
The combined discount of two in a row is 1 − (1 − d1)(1 − d2): for 20% and 10% that is 1 − 0.8 × 0.9 = 28%.
Worked example
A coat costs 250 and is marked “50% off, then an extra 50% at the till”. That sounds free, but 250 × 0.5 × 0.5 = 62.50: the total discount is 75%, and you save 187.50.
Common mistakes
- Adding discounts together. Two discounts in a row are always less than their sum.
- Reversing a discount with the same percent. A price cut by 25% (80 → 60) needs a 33.3% rise to return to 80.
- Comparing percent with amount. “30 off” on 100 is 30%, but on 300 it is 10%; enter it as a percent to compare offers.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a discount?
Multiply the price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). 25% off 80 is 80 × 0.75 = 60, so you save 20.
Is 20% off plus another 10% off the same as 30% off?
No. The second discount is taken from the already reduced price. 100 − 20% = 80, then 80 − 10% = 72, so the total discount is 28%, not 30%.
How do I find the original price from a sale price?
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). If a jacket costs 60 after 25% off, the original price was 60 ÷ 0.75 = 80.
Does the order of two discounts matter?
Not for the final price. 20% then 10% and 10% then 20% both give 72 from 100, because multiplication does not depend on order.
Is the discount taken before or after tax?
In shops that show prices with VAT, the discount applies to the price you see. Where tax is added at the till, as with US sales tax, it is normally charged on the discounted price.
