How to use it
- Choose Add tax if you know the price before tax, or Remove tax if you know the total you paid.
- Enter the amount.
- Enter the sales tax rate for your location.
- Read the price before tax, the tax and the total.
Formulas
| Task | Formula | Example at 8.25% |
|---|---|---|
| Add tax | tax = price × rate; total = price × (1 + rate) | 80 → tax 6.60, total 86.60 |
| Remove tax | price = total ÷ (1 + rate); tax = total − price | 108.25 → price 100, tax 8.25 |
Worked example
You are quoted 450 before tax and the local rate is 6.5%. The tax is 450 × 0.065 = 29.25 and the total is 479.25. A receipt for 479.25 contains 479.25 − 479.25 ÷ 1.065 = 29.25 of tax.
Tips
- Rates differ for different goods. Some places tax groceries, clothing or services at a different rate or not at all.
- Enter the combined rate. If state and local taxes are listed separately, add them together.
- Check rounding on big orders. Per-item rounding in a shop can differ from rounding the total.
- For tax filings, use official guidance. This is an everyday calculator, not tax advice.
