Stock profit calculator
Enter how many shares you bought, the buy and sell prices, the commission on each side and a tax rate if you want one. You get the net profit or loss, the return on your cost and the price you needed to sell at just to break even.
Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
How to use it
- Enter the number of shares and the buy and sell prices.
- Enter the total commission paid on the purchase and on the sale.
- Optionally enter a tax rate on gains.
How it works
- Cost = shares × buy price + buy commission.
- Proceeds = shares × sell price − sell commission.
- Profit = proceeds − cost; tax = tax rate × profit when the profit is positive.
- Return = net profit ÷ cost × 100.
Worked example
100 shares bought at 50 and sold at 60, with 5 commission on each side. Cost is 5,005, proceeds 5,995, profit 990, a return of 19.78%. The break-even sell price is (5,000 + 10) ÷ 100 = 50.10. With a 20% tax on the gain, the net profit would be 792.
Tips
- Commissions weigh more on small trades.
- Enter prices in one currency; this tool does no conversion.
- Use the stock average calculator to find your average price over several buys.
Frequently asked questions
How is the profit calculated?
Cost = shares × buy price + buy commission. Proceeds = shares × sell price − sell commission. Profit = proceeds − cost. 100 shares bought at 50 and sold at 60 with 5 commission each way: cost 5,005, proceeds 5,995, profit 990.
How is the tax handled?
The percentage you enter is taken off a positive profit. A loss pays no tax here and nothing is carried forward. Real rules differ by country and holding period, so use your own rate or leave it at 0.
What is the break-even price?
The sell price at which profit before tax is zero: (shares × buy price + both commissions) ÷ shares. It is slightly above the buy price because of the commissions.
Are dividends included?
No. Add dividends you received to the net profit yourself.
What if my commission is a percent?
Work out the amount (for example 0.1% of the trade value) and enter it as the commission.
