How to use it

  1. Enter your gross pay and choose how often you receive it.
  2. Enter the income tax rate and the payroll or social contributions rate.
  3. Add any fixed deduction taken each period.
  4. Read your take-home pay and the share of gross that is deducted.

How it works

  • Income tax = gross × income tax rate.
  • Payroll = gross × payroll rate.
  • Take-home = gross − income tax − payroll − fixed deductions.
  • Yearly take-home = take-home per period × periods per year.

Worked example

Gross 5,000 a month with 20% income tax, 7.65% payroll and 100 fixed: tax is 1,000, payroll 382.50, so deductions are 1,482.50 and take-home is 3,517.50 a month, or 42,210 a year. That is 29.65% of gross.

Tips

  • Use the average rate from a real payslip for the closest result.
  • Bonuses and overtime may be withheld at different rates than regular pay.
  • This is an estimate, not tax advice.

Frequently asked questions

Why are there no tax tables?

Rules, brackets and allowances differ by country, region and person, and they change. You enter the rates that apply to you, so the result matches your situation instead of a guess.

Which rate should I enter for income tax?

Use your average rate, which is the total tax divided by gross pay. Your payslip or yearly tax statement usually shows it. A top bracket rate would overstate the tax.

What are fixed deductions?

Amounts taken as a fixed sum each period, such as health insurance or union dues. They are subtracted after the percentages.

How are monthly and yearly figures worked out?

Net pay per period is multiplied by the periods in a year (1, 12, 26 for every two weeks, or 52) and divided by 12 for the monthly figure.
