How to use it
- Choose the finding for each of the five items; the points are shown in brackets.
- Read the Bishop score and its reading.
The point table
| Item | 0 | 1 | 2 | 3 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dilation | Closed | 1–2 cm | 3–4 cm | ≥ 5 cm |
| Effacement | 0–30 % | 40–50 % | 60–70 % | ≥ 80 % |
| Station | −3 | −2 | −1, 0 | +1, +2 |
| Consistency | Firm | Medium | Soft | — |
| Position | Posterior | Mid | Anterior | — |
The total runs from 0 to 13: 8 or more favourable, 7 borderline, 6 or less unfavourable.
Worked example
Dilated 3 cm (2), 60 % effaced (2), station −1 (2), soft (2), posterior (0): 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 0 = 8, favourable.
Tips
- The score depends on an internal examination; findings vary between examiners, so repeat by the same person when you can.
- Some units use a modified Bishop score that replaces effacement with cervical length; this calculator uses the original five items.
- This is an estimate for information, not a diagnosis or a treatment decision.
