How to use it

  1. Type a number. A dot or a comma works as the decimal separator.
  2. Choose the unit you have and the unit you need. The ⇄ button swaps them.
  3. The table below shows the same length in all common units at once.

Conversion factors

Every unit is converted through the meter. The imperial units have exact metric definitions, so there is no rounding in the factors themselves.

Unit In meters
1 inch 0.0254 m
1 foot = 12 inches 0.3048 m
1 yard = 3 feet 0.9144 m
1 mile = 1,760 yards 1,609.344 m
1 nautical mile 1,852 m

To convert between two units, multiply by the first unit’s factor and divide by the second’s: 6 ft = 6 × 0.3048 ÷ 0.0254 = 72 in.

Worked example

A room is 4.5 meters long. In feet that is 4.5 ÷ 0.3048 = 14.76 ft, or about 14 feet 9 inches (0.76 × 12 ≈ 9 inches).

Quick reference

  • 1 cm ≈ 0.3937 in, 1 in = 2.54 cm
  • 1 m ≈ 3.2808 ft ≈ 1.0936 yd
  • 1 km ≈ 0.6214 mi, 1 mi ≈ 1.6093 km
  • 5 ft 9 in = 69 in = 175.26 cm
