Basketball shooting stats calculator

Enter field goals, three-pointers and free throws made and attempted, for a game or a season. The calculator gives true shooting percentage (TS%), which counts threes and free throws, effective field goal percentage (eFG%), points and the usual shooting splits. Three-pointers are part of field goals, as in every box score.

How to use it

  1. Enter field goals made and attempted, including threes.
  2. Enter three-pointers made and attempted.
  3. Enter free throws made and attempted.
  4. Read TS% and eFG% at the top and the splits below.

The formulas

  • Points = 2 × FGM + 3PM + FTM
  • TS% = points ÷ (2 × (FGA + 0.44 × FTA))
  • eFG% = (FGM + 0.5 × 3PM) ÷ FGA
  • FG% = FGM ÷ FGA; 2P% = (FGM − 3PM) ÷ (FGA − 3PA); 3P% = 3PM ÷ 3PA; FT% = FTM ÷ FTA

Worked example

8 of 17 from the field, 2 of 5 from three, 4 of 5 free throws:

  • points = 16 + 2 + 4 = 22;
  • true shooting attempts = 17 + 0.44 × 5 = 19.2; TS% = 22 ÷ 38.4 = 57.3 %;
  • eFG% = 9 ÷ 17 = 52.9 %; FG% 47.1 %, 2P% 6 ÷ 12 = 50 %, 3P% 40 %, FT% 80 %.

Tips

  • Use totals over several games: one game of a few shots says little.
  • A lower FG% can still be efficient if many of the makes are threes; that is what eFG% shows.
  • When comparing players, look at volume too: keeping a high TS% on many attempts is harder.

Frequently asked questions

How is true shooting percentage calculated?

TS% = points ÷ (2 × (FGA + 0.44 × FTA)). The 0.44 turns free throw attempts into shooting possessions, since and-ones and three-shot fouls mean not every pair of free throws is one possession. 22 points on 17 shots and 5 free throws: 22 ÷ (2 × 19.2) = 57.3 %.

What is effective field goal percentage?

eFG% = (FGM + 0.5 × 3PM) ÷ FGA. It counts a made three as one and a half field goals, because it is worth 1.5 times a two. 8 of 17 with 2 threes: (8 + 1) ÷ 17 = 52.9 %.

Which is better, TS% or eFG%?

TS% is the fuller measure because it also includes free throws; eFG% looks only at shots from the field. A player who gets to the line a lot has a TS% well above the eFG%.

Why must three-pointers be counted in field goals?

Box scores count every made shot from the field, two or three, as a field goal. Points are therefore 2 × FGM + 3PM + FTM: each three adds one point to the two of a field goal.

What is a good true shooting percentage?

It depends on the league and era; compare a player with the league average of the same season rather than with a fixed number.
