How to use it
- Choose decathlon or heptathlon.
- Enter times in seconds (10.85) and the long race as minutes and seconds (4:35.00); a comma works as the decimal mark too.
- Enter jumps and throws in metres (7.40).
- Read the points per event and the total; empty events are left out, so you can follow a competition as it goes.
The formulas
- Track: points = ⌊A × (B − T)^C⌋, T in seconds
- Jumps: points = ⌊A × (M − B)^C⌋, M in centimetres
- Throws: points = ⌊A × (M − B)^C⌋, M in metres
- A result at or worse than B scores 0. The constants are the World Athletics ones (for example 100 m: A = 25.4347, B = 18, C = 1.81).
Worked example
Default decathlon marks: 10.85 – 7.40 – 14.50 – 2.01 – 48.90 – 14.30 – 44.00 – 4.90 – 62.00 – 4:35.00.
- 100 m 894, long jump 910, shot put 759, high jump 813, 400 m 866;
- 110 m hurdles 936, discus 746, pole vault 880, javelin 768, 1500 m 712;
- total 8,284 points.
Tips
- Enter official marks as published: jumps and throws to the centimetre, times to the hundredth.
- Track points rise faster than linearly as times drop: a tenth of a second is worth more at 10.4 than at 11.4.
- Use the per-event points to see where training pays most.
