CTR calculator

Click-through rate is the share of people who saw an ad, a search result or an email link and clicked it. Fill in any two of impressions, clicks and CTR, leave the third empty, and the calculator finds it.

Leave one of the three fields empty: that is the one calculated.

How to use it

  1. Fill in two of the three fields: impressions, clicks or CTR.
  2. Leave the field you want to find empty.
  3. The result appears at the top, with clicks per 1,000 impressions below.

How it works

  • CTR = clicks ÷ impressions × 100.
  • Clicks = impressions × CTR ÷ 100.
  • Impressions = clicks ÷ CTR × 100.
  • Clicks per 1,000 impressions = CTR × 10.

Worked example

A search ad had 20,000 impressions and 500 clicks. CTR = 500 ÷ 20,000 × 100 = 2.5%, or 25 clicks per 1,000 impressions.

To reach 250 clicks with a newsletter link that gets a 0.5% CTR, you need 250 ÷ 0.5 × 100 = 50,000 impressions.

Tips

  • Use the same date range and filters for clicks and impressions.
  • A high CTR with few conversions may mean the ad promises something the page does not deliver.
  • Track campaign links with UTM parameters to see clicks per source in your analytics.

Frequently asked questions

How is CTR calculated?

CTR = clicks ÷ impressions × 100. An ad shown 20,000 times and clicked 500 times has a CTR of 500 ÷ 20,000 × 100 = 2.5%.

How many clicks will I get at a given CTR?

Clicks = impressions × CTR ÷ 100. At 20,000 impressions and a 3% CTR you can expect about 600 clicks.

How many impressions do I need?

Impressions = clicks ÷ CTR × 100. To get 250 clicks at 0.5% you need 50,000 impressions.

What is a good CTR?

It depends heavily on the channel, the position, the industry and the audience, so there is no single number. Compare your CTR with your own past campaigns or with figures for the same platform and placement.

Is CTR the same as conversion rate?

No. CTR measures clicks per view. Conversion rate measures sign-ups or sales per visit or click, which happens after the click.
