Character frequency counter
Paste a text to see which characters it uses most. Count everything including spaces, or only letters and digits, and ignore case or not. Emoji and accented letters are counted as the single characters you see.
Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
How to use it
- Paste your text. The table updates as you type.
- Choose what to count: all characters, letters and digits, or letters only.
- Choose how many rows to show, or all of them.
- Press Copy table to get the characters and counts as tab-separated lines.
How it works
The text is split into visible characters, each one is counted in a map, and the rows are sorted by count, highest first. The share is a character’s count divided by the number of counted characters. The bar is drawn relative to the top row.
Worked example
In “Hello, World!” with case ignored and everything counted, “l” appears 3 times and “o” 2 times out of 13 characters, so “l” is 23.1% and “o” is 15.4%.
Tips
Letter counts help with simple substitution ciphers and with checking a word-game text. For single words use the word frequency counter; for totals and limits use the character counter.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as one character?
What you see as one symbol. An emoji with a skin tone, a flag, or a letter written as a base letter plus a combining accent is counted once, not as its parts.
What does "Ignore case" do?
With it on, "A" and "a" are added together and shown in lower case. Turn it off to see them as two different characters.
How are ties ordered?
Characters with the same count stay in the order they first appear in your text.
Are spaces and line breaks counted?
With "All characters", yes - they are shown as Space, Tab and Line break. Choose letters and digits, or letters only, to leave them out. The share column is based on the characters that are counted.
