Strikethrough text generator
Type your text to cross it out with combining Unicode characters instead of formatting, so the strikethrough survives copy and paste into chats, bios and comments.
Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
How to use it
- Type or paste your text.
- Choose strikethrough, underline, both, or a slash through the letters.
- Press Copy and paste the result where you need it.
How it works
Unicode has combining characters that attach to the letter before them. This tool puts one after every visible character: U+0336 (combining long stroke overlay) for strikethrough, U+0332 (combining low line) for underline, both for the third style, and U+0338 (combining long solidus overlay) for the slash. Characters are counted as users see them, so an emoji with a skin tone gets a single mark.
Worked example
“abc” becomes the same three letters, each followed by U+0336, which looks like a̶b̶c̶. It is 6 code points long instead of 3, so mind length limits in the place where you paste.
Tips
Use it for corrections and jokes in places that have no strikethrough button. Do not use it for text that must be read aloud or searched, and avoid it in usernames or passwords, where the extra characters can be rejected.
Frequently asked questions
Why does it work where bold and italic do not?
The line is not formatting. A special invisible character (U+0336 for strikethrough) is placed after each letter, and the app draws it over that letter. Any place that accepts Unicode text can show it.
Where might it fail?
Some fonts draw the marks too high, too low or with gaps between letters, and a few apps ignore them. Check the result in the place where you will use it. Search and screen readers may handle the text poorly.
Are the marks added to spaces and emoji?
Spaces are marked, so the line is continuous across words. Line breaks are not. An emoji or a letter with its accent is one visible character, and gets one mark after the whole character.
How do I get the plain text back?
The marks are real characters in the text, so there is no formatting to turn off. Keep your original text, or remove the marks with find and replace in regex mode (the pattern [\u0332\u0336\u0338] matches them).
