Remove duplicate lines

Paste a list - e-mails, keywords, names, URLs - and get it back with every line only once, in its original order, with the number of removed lines.

Removed: 2 · Left: 4

Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Paste the list into the left box, one item per line.
  2. Turn on the options you need. The cleaned list appears on the right at once, with the number of removed and remaining lines under it.
  3. Press Copy.

How it works

The tool reads the text line by line and remembers every line it has already seen. A line seen before is skipped; a new one is added to the result. With “Ignore case” the comparison uses the lowercase form of each line; with “Ignore spaces at line ends” lines are trimmed first. Empty lines are either removed or kept untouched, depending on “Keep empty lines”.

Worked example

The list apple, banana, Apple, cherry, banana, apple (6 lines) becomes apple, banana, Apple, cherry: 2 lines removed, 4 left. With “Ignore case” on, “Apple” is a repeat of “apple” as well, so the result is apple, banana, cherry: 3 removed, 3 left.

Tips

Mailing lists often contain the same address with different capitals or a trailing space: turn both options on. A file from Windows works too - its line breaks are recognised, and the result uses plain line breaks.

Frequently asked questions

Which copy of a repeated line is kept?

The first one. Later repeats are deleted, and the remaining lines keep their original order, so the list is not sorted. Use sort lines if you also want it in alphabetical order.

Are "Apple" and "apple" duplicates?

Only with "Ignore case" on; then the first spelling is kept. By default the comparison is exact.

What happens to empty lines?

By default every empty line (or line of only spaces) is removed and counted as removed. With "Keep empty lines" on, they all stay where they were and are never treated as duplicates, which keeps paragraphs intact.

What does "Ignore spaces at line ends" change?

Spaces and tabs at the start and end of each line are removed before comparing, and the result shows the trimmed lines. "apple" and "apple " then count as the same line.
