Text to speech
Paste a text, choose a voice and press Speak. The speech comes from the voices your browser or device already provides, so the text is never uploaded, and the choice of voices depends on your system.
Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
How to use it
- Type or paste your text.
- Pick a language and a voice from the lists.
- Press Speak. Use Pause, Resume and Stop while it plays. Moving the speed, pitch and volume sliders applies to the next time you press Speak.
How it works
The page uses the Web Speech API built into your browser. It asks the browser for the installed voices, groups them by language and sends your text to the voice you chose with the speed (0.5 to 2), pitch (0 to 2) and volume (0 to 100 %) you set. While it speaks, the browser reports each word it reaches, and the page marks it in the text below the buttons when the voice supports that.
Tips
Speed 0.8 to 1.2 is the most natural for most voices. Write numbers and abbreviations the way you want them said. If a voice mispronounces a word, try spelling it the way it sounds. Changing the text while it speaks stops the speech.
Frequently asked questions
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
This site sends nothing. The text is handed to the speech engine of your own browser or operating system. Some browsers offer voices that run on an online service, and for those the text may leave your device. The page shows a note when the selected voice is not marked as local.
Why is the list of voices different on my phone and my computer?
The voices come from the device, not from this page. Windows, macOS, Android, iOS and each browser ship different sets, and you can add more in the system settings. The language list shows how many voices each language has.
Why is no word highlighted while it reads?
Highlighting needs the speech engine to report word boundaries while it speaks. Many voices do, but some browsers and online voices do not. The speech still plays; only the highlight is missing.
Why does it say no voices were found?
Some systems have no speech voice installed, some browsers load the list a moment after the page opens, and some private or locked-down browsers hide it. Wait a few seconds, then try another browser or install a voice in the system settings.
Can I save the speech as an audio file?
No. Browsers play the speech but do not give a page access to the audio, so this tool cannot record it.
