SWOT analysis maker

A SWOT analysis sorts what you know about a business, project or plan into four boxes. Write one point per line and the table builds itself. Print it from the browser or copy it as text or Markdown. Nothing leaves your device.

One point per line. A leading dash, bullet or number is removed.

Strengths and weaknesses are usually things inside the organisation; opportunities and threats come from outside it.

Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Name the subject of your analysis, for example a shop, a product or a personal plan.
  2. Write each point on its own line in the four boxes.
  3. Press Print, or copy the table as text or as Markdown.

How it works

Each box is split into lines, and blank lines are dropped. A leading dash, bullet or number is removed so that pasted lists look tidy. The table shows the four boxes in a two by two grid. In the Markdown version the lists run down four columns, and a vertical bar inside a point is escaped.

Worked example

For a neighbourhood bakery, “Fresh bread every morning” is a strength, “No online ordering” a weakness, “Office catering nearby” an opportunity and “New supermarket bakery” a threat. The default example shows this full table.

Tips

Keep each point short and specific, and aim for three to six per box. Note facts you can check rather than opinions. After the table is done, pick the one or two points that need action first and write down who will do what.

Frequently asked questions

What does SWOT stand for?

Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. It is a planning aid that puts what is going well and badly inside an organisation next to the chances and risks outside it.

What is the difference between a weakness and a threat?

A weakness is something inside the business that you can change, such as a small team. A threat comes from outside, such as a new competitor or a rise in prices, so you can plan for it but not remove it.

How do I print only the table?

Press Print. Only the SWOT table is printed, without the input boxes or the rest of the page. Choose landscape in the print dialog if your points are long.

Can I paste the result into a document?

Yes. Copy as text gives four headed lists, and Copy as Markdown gives a four-column table that works in many notes apps, wikis and README files.
