How to use it

  1. Choose Text to emoji or Emoji to text.
  2. Type or paste your text. The result updates as you type.
  3. Copy the result. With “keep the words” on, each emoji follows its word, such as “love ❤️”.

How it works

The list pairs each emoji with one or more English words. Forward, every word made of letters is matched against the list. Backward, each emoji from the list is replaced by its first word. Symbols that normally show as plain text, like the heart or the sun, get the emoji-style marker so they appear as pictures.

Worked example

“I love pizza” becomes “I ❤️ 🍕”. Turning that back gives “I love pizza”. “Cats and dishes” becomes “🐱 and dishes”: “cats” matches cat, while “dishes” is not in the list.

Tips

Short, concrete nouns and feelings work best. Words like “no”, “hi” or “time” are in the list too, so they turn into emoji in everyday sentences. For choosing emoji by name yourself, use the emoji picker.

Frequently asked questions

How does the translation work?

Each English word is looked up in a built-in list, ignoring case. A plural ending in s or es is tried without the ending, so "cats" finds "cat". Words that are not in the list are left unchanged.

Is this a real language translator?

No. It is a simple word-for-word list of over 120 common emoji, so it does not understand grammar, context or other languages. A word with several meanings gets just one emoji.

Which word does an emoji turn into?

Each emoji has a first word that it becomes in text, for example the heart becomes "love" and the sun becomes "sun". Other words for the same emoji, such as heart or sunny, work in the text-to-emoji direction only.

Why are some emoji left as they are in the back direction?

Only emoji from the built-in list are converted. Any other emoji stays in the text unchanged.
