SERP preview tool

Type a title, a description and a page address and see a search result snippet. The tool estimates the width of each line in pixels and shows where it would probably be cut, which is a better guide than counting characters alone.

56 characters, about 521 px (limit around 580 px)
156 characters, about 951 px (limit around 920 px)

  • Title: probably fits
  • Description: probably cut off

The pixel widths are estimates made with Arial letter widths, and the limits are rules of thumb. Google may use other fonts, cut at other points, or rewrite the title and description, so treat this as a guide.

Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Enter your page title, meta description and full URL.
  2. Look at the preview and the counters under each box. A red counter means that part would probably be cut with an ellipsis.
  3. Edit the text until both lines fit, then put it into your page.

How it works

Each character gets a width taken from Arial’s letter widths, scaled to 20 pixels for the title and 14 pixels for the description. The widths are added up and compared with a title limit of about 580 pixels and a description limit of about 920 pixels, both rules of thumb for desktop results. When the text is too wide, the preview is cut at the last character that fits and an ellipsis is added.

Worked example

A title made of 40 narrow letters can be shorter in pixels than one of 30 capital letters. “Free Online Unit Converter – Length, Weight, Temperature” is 56 characters and still fits, because most letters are lower case.

Tips

Put the most important words at the start of the title, since the end is what gets cut. Give every page its own title and description. To write the tags themselves, use the meta tag generator.

Frequently asked questions

How wide can a title be in Google?

Google cuts titles by width, not by a character count. A common rule of thumb is about 580 pixels for the desktop title line, which is often 50 to 60 characters, but narrow letters fit more and wide ones such as W and M fit fewer. The limit is not published, so this is only a guide.

Why does the pixel width differ from other tools?

Every tool estimates it with its own font data. This one uses Arial letter widths at 20 pixels for the title and 14 pixels for the description. The real snippet may use another font, so expect a difference of a few percent.

Will Google always show my description?

No. Google often picks a passage from the page that matches the search, and it may rewrite the title as well. A clear description still helps when it is used,.

What does the URL line show?

The site address, followed by the path segments separated by arrows, in the style of a desktop result. The preview does not check that the page exists.
