Split text by length

Paste a long text, choose a limit such as 280 or 160 characters, and get numbered parts that each fit. Breaks fall on spaces, emoji count as one character, and numbers can be added to each part.

How to use it

  1. Paste the text.
  2. Choose the limit and whether to count characters or words.
  3. Choose how the parts are numbered: a header line, a number in front, at the end, or none.
  4. Copy the result. Parts are separated by a blank line (and a header line if chosen).

How it works

Characters are counted as grapheme clusters, the units a reader sees as one character. From the start of the text, a window of the limit’s size is taken and the part ends at the last space inside it (or right at the limit if the next character is a space). The next part starts after the spaces that follow. In word mode, each part simply takes the next N words with their original spacing.

Worked example

“hello world foo bar” with a limit of 10 characters: “hello world” would be 11, so the first part is “hello”. The second is “world foo” (9) and the third “bar”.

Tips

For SMS, 160 characters is the length of one standard message, but text with non-Latin letters or emoji uses a shorter limit per message, so keep a margin. Check the real limit of the service you post to; they change.

Frequently asked questions

Where does it cut the text?

At the last space that keeps the part within the limit. Spaces and line breaks at the cut are dropped, and breaks inside a part are kept. Leading and trailing space of the whole text is ignored.

What if one word is longer than the limit?

Then there is no space to cut at, so that word is cut at the limit. This is the only case in which a word is split.

How are characters counted?

As visible characters, so a letter with an accent, an emoji with a skin tone or a flag counts as one and is never cut in the middle. Some services count links and certain emoji differently, so keep a margin.

Does the number count against the limit?

With the number in front or at the end, yes: room for it is reserved, so the finished part still fits. A header line is separate and does not count. In word mode the limit counts words only.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Splitting runs in your browser.
