Poker outs calculator

Count your outs, the cards that complete your hand, and pick the street. The calculator gives the exact chance of hitting on the next card and by the river, the rule-of-thumb estimate and the share of the pot you need to win to make a call pay.

How to use it

  1. Choose whether you are on the flop or on the turn.
  2. Count your outs and enter the number.
  3. Enter the pot (including your opponent’s bet) and the amount you have to call.
  4. Call if your chance on the next card is higher than the equity needed, allowing for implied odds.

The formulas

  • Next card: outs ÷ unseen, where unseen = 47 on the flop and 46 on the turn.
  • By the river (from the flop): 1 − ((47 − outs) × (46 − outs)) ÷ (47 × 46).
  • Rule of 4 and 2: outs × 4 on the flop, outs × 2 on the turn.
  • Odds against: (unseen − outs) : outs.
  • Pot odds: call ÷ (pot + call).

Worked example

A flush draw on the flop (9 outs), 100 in the pot and 20 to call:

  • next card: 9 ÷ 47 = 19.1 %, odds 38 : 9 = 4.2 : 1;
  • by the river: 1 − 38 × 37 ÷ 2,162 = 1 − 1,406 ÷ 2,162 = 35 %; the rule of 4 says 36 %;
  • needed: 20 ÷ 120 = 16.7 %, so calling one card is profitable.

Frequently asked questions

What are outs?

The unseen cards that would give you the winning hand. A flush draw has 9 outs (13 cards of the suit minus the 4 you see), an open-ended straight draw 8, a gutshot 4, two overcards about 6. Do not count cards that would also give your opponent a better hand.

How is the chance of hitting calculated?

On the flop 47 cards are unseen, on the turn 46. The chance on the next card is outs ÷ unseen. By the river, the calculator takes 1 minus the chance of missing twice: 1 − (38 × 37) ÷ (47 × 46) = 35 % for 9 outs. Unseen includes cards in other players' hands, which you cannot see either.

What is the rule of 2 and 4?

A quick mental estimate: on the flop multiply your outs by 4 to get the percent chance by the river; on the turn multiply by 2. 9 outs give 36 % against the exact 35 %. The rule overestimates above about 8 outs on the flop, so the calculator caps it at 100 %.

How do I use pot odds?

Compare your chance of winning with the share of the final pot that your call makes up: call ÷ (pot + call). Calling 20 into a pot of 100 needs 20 ÷ 120 = 16.7 %. With a flush draw on the turn, 9 ÷ 46 = 19.6 %, the call pays in the long run; implied odds from later bets can justify more.
