How to use it

  1. Type a number. A dot or a comma works as the decimal separator.
  2. Choose the unit you have and the unit you need. The ⇄ button swaps them.
  3. The table below shows the same value in all common units at once.

Conversion factors

Every unit is converted through the farad (F).

Unit Value
1 millifarad (mF) 0.001 F
1 microfarad (µF) 10⁻⁶ F = 1,000 nF
1 nanofarad (nF) 10⁻⁹ F = 1,000 pF
1 picofarad (pF) 10⁻¹² F

Worked example

A capacitor marked 104 is 10 × 10⁴ = 100,000 pF, which is 100 nF or 0.1 µF. A 4,700 pF capacitor is 4.7 nF.

Quick reference

  • 1 µF = 1,000 nF = 1,000,000 pF
  • Code 104 = 100 nF, code 473 = 47 nF, code 102 = 1 nF
  • Capacitors in parallel add; in series the reciprocals add

Frequently asked questions

How many nanofarads are in a microfarad?

1,000. One microfarad (µF) equals 1,000 nanofarads (nF) and 1,000,000 picofarads (pF).

What does a capacitor code like 104 mean?

The three-digit code reads as two digits plus a power of ten, in picofarads: 104 = 10 × 10⁴ pF = 100,000 pF = 100 nF = 0.1 µF.

Why is capacitance usually written in µF, nF or pF?

A farad is a very large unit. Real capacitors range from a few picofarads in radio circuits to thousands of microfarads in power supplies.

What is a farad?

The SI unit of capacitance: one coulomb of stored charge per volt. A 1 F capacitor charged to 1 V holds 1 C.
