How to use it

  1. Pick a paper size from the list.
  2. Set the DPI for the pixel size. Use 300 for print, 72 or 96 for screens.
  3. Read the size in each unit. Pixels are rounded to the nearest whole pixel.

How it works

A0 has an area of one square metre. Each next size is half of the previous one, with the long side cut in two and the result rounded down to whole millimetres. B sizes are the geometric mean of two neighbouring A sizes, and C sizes are the geometric mean of A and B, which makes a C envelope fit an A sheet of the same number. US sizes are defined in inches and converted at 25.4 mm per inch.

Worked example

A4 is 210 × 297 mm. In inches that is 210 ÷ 25.4 = 8.27 and 297 ÷ 25.4 = 11.69. At 300 DPI that is 8.27 × 300 = 2480 pixels wide and 11.69 × 300 = 3508 pixels high.

Frequently asked questions

How big is A4 in pixels?

A4 is 210 × 297 mm, which is 2480 × 3508 pixels at 300 DPI, 1654 × 2339 at 200 DPI, and 595 × 842 at 72 DPI. Pixels are the size in inches multiplied by the DPI, rounded to whole pixels.

What is the difference between A4 and US Letter?

A4 is 210 × 297 mm (8.27 × 11.69 in). US Letter is 8.5 × 11 in (215.9 × 279.4 mm), so it is wider and shorter. A design for one needs a small adjustment to print well on the other.

Why do A sizes always have the ratio 1.414?

Each A size is the previous one cut in half across its longer side. Only a ratio of 1 to √2 (1.4142) stays the same after halving, so every A sheet has it. B and C sizes use the same ratio. The tool shows height ÷ width so you can see this.

What are B and C sizes used for?

B sizes are mostly for posters and books, because each B size is between two A sizes. C sizes are for envelopes. A C5 envelope, for example, holds an A5 sheet and is slightly larger.

How many points is a page?

A point is 1/72 inch. A4 is 595.3 × 841.9 pt and US Letter is exactly 612 × 792 pt. PDF files and many design tools use points for page sizes.
