Electric field strength converter

Type a field strength, choose the units, and see it in every common unit. Useful for insulation ratings, dielectric strength and EMC limits.

How to use it

  1. Type a number. A dot or a comma works as the decimal separator.
  2. Choose the unit you have and the unit you need.
  3. The table shows the same value in all common units at once.

Conversion factors

Every unit is converted through volts per metre (V/m).

Unit In V/m
1 V/cm 100
1 V/mm 1,000
1 kV/cm 100,000
1 MV/m = 1 kV/mm 1,000,000
1 V/in ≈ 39.37
1 statV/cm 29,979.2458

Worked example

An insulator is rated for 3 kV/mm. That is 3 × 1,000,000 = 3 MV/m, or 30 kV/cm. Across a 2 mm gap it holds up to 3 × 2 = 6 kV.

Quick reference

  • 1 V/m = 1 N/C
  • E = V / d for a uniform field between plates
  • Field strength is a vector; this tool converts only its size

Frequently asked questions

Is a volt per metre the same as a newton per coulomb?

Yes. Electric field strength can be written as force per charge (N/C) or as potential per distance (V/m). Both units are the same size.

How do I convert kV/cm to MV/m?

Multiply by 0.1. 1 kV/cm is 1,000 V over 0.01 m = 100,000 V/m = 0.1 MV/m. So 30 kV/cm equals 3 MV/m.

Why is MV/m equal to kV/mm?

Both are 10⁶ V/m: 1 MV over 1 m is 1,000 kV over 1,000 mm, the same ratio.

What is a statvolt per centimetre?

The CGS electrostatic unit of field strength. 1 statV is 299.792458 V, so 1 statV/cm is 29,979.2458 V/m.
