Cooking converter

Type an amount from a recipe, choose the units, and see it in cups, spoons, fluid ounces and milliliters. This converts volume to volume; it does not turn cups of flour into grams.

How to use it

  1. Type a number. For half a cup enter 0.5. A dot or a comma works as the decimal separator.
  2. Choose the unit you have and the unit you need. The ⇄ button swaps them.
  3. The table below shows the same amount in all common kitchen units at once.

What this converts

This is a volume converter for recipes. It works between units of volume only, such as cups, spoons and milliliters. It cannot give you grams or ounces of weight, because those depend on what you are measuring.

Unit In milliliters
1 US teaspoon 4.92892159375 mL
1 US tablespoon = 3 tsp 14.78676478125 mL
1 US fluid ounce = 2 tbsp 29.5735295625 mL
1 US cup = 8 fl oz = 16 tbsp 236.5882365 mL
1 metric cup 250 mL
1 US pint = 2 cups 473.176473 mL
1 US quart = 4 cups 946.352946 mL

Worked example

A recipe calls for ¾ cup of milk and you have a measuring jug marked in milliliters. 0.75 × 236.5882365 = 177.4 mL. A metric-cup recipe calling for 1½ cups (375 mL) needs 375 ÷ 236.5882365 = 1.585 US cups, a little over 1½ US cups.

Tips

  • Pick the right cup first: if the recipe is Australian or British-metric, use the 250 mL cup.
  • 1 US cup is almost exactly 240 mL on food labels, but this tool keeps the unrounded value.
  • To measure weight, weigh the ingredient: see the weight converter for ounces and pounds.

Frequently asked questions

How many milliliters are in a cup?

A US customary cup is 236.5882365 mL (8 US fluid ounces). A metric cup, used in Australia, New Zealand and many metric cookbooks, is 250 mL. The difference of about 6% rarely ruins a recipe, but it is why this tool lists both.

How many teaspoons are in a tablespoon?

Three. In the US system 1 tbsp = 3 tsp = 14.79 mL, and a cup is 16 tablespoons or 48 teaspoons.

Can I convert cups of flour or sugar to grams here?

No. Cups, spoons and milliliters measure volume, and the weight of a cup depends on the ingredient and how it is packed. For grams you need a density for that ingredient; this tool only converts between volume units.

How many fluid ounces are in a cup?

Eight US fluid ounces. One fluid ounce is 2 tablespoons, or 29.57 mL.

Are the spoons here the same as the 5 mL and 15 mL spoons?

Recipes in metric countries usually treat a teaspoon as 5 mL and a tablespoon as 15 mL. The US spoons used here are slightly smaller: 4.93 mL and 14.79 mL. For a general-purpose volume tool with more units, see the volume converter.
