Worked example
EU 40 means a shoe length of 40 ÷ 1.5 = 26.67 cm, which is 10.50 inches. That gives UK 3 × 10.50 − 25 = 6.5, US men 7.5 and US women 9.
Limits
- The result is for adult sizes and is shown to one decimal. Real shoes are sold in whole or half sizes, so round to the nearest size the brand makes.
- Width, sports shoe cuts and brand lasts change fit. When in doubt, try the shoe on or read the brand’s chart.
Frequently asked questions
How are the sizes calculated?
Through the shoe length in cm. EU uses Paris points of 2/3 cm, so EU = 1.5 × cm. UK uses barleycorns of 1/3 inch with size 0 at 8⅓ inches, so UK = 3 × inches − 25. US men is UK + 1 and US women is US men + 1.5.
Is the result exact for my brand?
No. Each brand uses its own shoe shapes and toe room, and some round or skip sizes. Use the converted size as a starting point and check the brand's own chart.
Is the cm value my foot length?
No. It is the length of the shoe (its last), which is longer than the foot to leave room for toes. To pick a size, compare your measured foot with the brand's chart instead of this number.
Do the sizes work for children?
No. The formulas are checked for adult sizes, shoe lengths from 20 to 36 cm. Children's sizes restart numbering in UK and US charts, so they are not covered.
Why do US men and women differ by 1.5 sizes?
It is the usual convention: the same shoe length is 1.5 sizes higher on the women's scale. For example US men 7.5 is the same length as US women 9.
