How to use it
- Type a number. A dot or a comma works as the decimal separator.
- Choose the unit you have and the unit you need. The ⇄ button swaps them.
- The table below shows the same volume in all common units at once.
Conversion factors
Every unit is converted through the liter. The US gallon is defined as 231 cubic inches, which is exactly 3.785411784 L; the smaller US units divide it evenly. The imperial gallon is defined as exactly 4.54609 L.
| Unit | In liters |
|---|---|
| 1 US fluid ounce | 0.0295735295625 L |
| 1 US cup = 8 fl oz | 0.2365882365 L |
| 1 US pint = 2 cups | 0.473176473 L |
| 1 US quart = 2 pints | 0.946352946 L |
| 1 US gallon = 4 quarts | 3.785411784 L |
| 1 imperial gallon | 4.54609 L |
| 1 cubic foot | 28.316846592 L |
Worked example
A car tank holds 13.2 US gallons. In liters that is 13.2 × 3.785411784 = 49.97 L. The same 13.2 in imperial gallons would be 13.2 × 4.54609 = 60.01 L, which is why it matters which gallon a spec sheet uses.
Quick reference
- 1 L ≈ 0.2642 US gal ≈ 33.814 US fl oz
- 1 US qt ≈ 0.9464 L
- 1 imperial pint = 568.26125 mL
- 1 m³ = 1,000 L = 35.31 ft³ (approximately)
